Wayne Tilley

Professor Wayne Tilley is the Inaugural Director of the Dame Roma Mitchell Cancer Research Laboratories (DRMCRL), Adelaide Medical School, the University of Adelaide (2002-current). He is internationally recognized for research on the role of sex hormones (estrogens, progestogens and androgens) in hormone-dependent cancers, in particular breast and prostate cancer as well as being one of the first to clone the human androgen receptor. Prof Tilley received the 2016 Endocrine Society of Australia Senior Plenary Award for outstanding research in the field of endocrinology and presented the opening plenary lecture at the International Congress of Endocrinology in Beijing. In 2023 he was awarded the Rob Sutherland Translational Award by Breast Cancer Trials Australia in recognition of excellence in scientific and translational research and achievements and contributions to improved patient outcomes. Professor Tilley is Director of the Dame Roma Mitchell Cancer Research Laboratories and the Adelaide Prostate Cancer Research Centre at the University of Adelaide. His research program is broadly focussed on hormonal carcinogenesis in breast and prostate cancer, with emphasis on mechanisms of sex hormone signalling and the emergence of resistance to hormonal therapies used in the treatment of these diseases. A current major research focus is the development of novel single or combinatorial treatments that better target the androgen receptor (AR) in prostate cancer that may also be useful in the treatment of certain subtypes of breast cancer.
