Heather L Shepherd

Dr Heather Shepherd BA (Hons), Dip HE (Nursing), RN, PhD Heather Shepherd is a health communication researcher with qualifications in health and language studies, a clinical background in nursing and a doctorate in Psychological Medicine. Heather was awarded her PhD from the Faculty of Medicine at Sydney University in 2008, thesis entitled “Involving patients in treatment decision-making: the views and attitudes of Australian cancer doctors to shared decision-making”. In 2009 she was awarded an NHMRC Public Health Postdoctoral Fellowship that focussed on empowering consumers to access evidence based information about options, outcomes and probabilities of treatment or test options being considered. Her previous studies and nursing experience demonstrated the importance of communication in highly emotive situations for patients, their families and staff. These experiences underpin her commitment to developing and promoting health literacy. Heather’s research focuses on shared decision-making, doctor/patient communication, evidence-based medicine, health professionals’ perspectives and development and evaluation of tools to support health literacy, empowerment and health professional experience. Her current role as Research Fellow and Program Manager of a Translational Program Grant brings together her expertise in managing relationships between stakeholders with organisational, institutional, professional and clinical interests, as well as addressing the important gap between research and practice.
